Alberta Water Program Grants for Irrigation: How Farmers Can Save Up to 50% on Irrigation Upgrades

If diesel prices have been keeping you up at night and fertilizer bills are chewing into margins harder than ever, you are not alone. Folks across southern Alberta and right up through central and northern Alberta are feeling the squeeze in 2026. The good news is this year’s strong snowpack and water outlook have lined up something rare: a season where upgrading your pivot can actually pay back faster than expected.

When water supply is solid and grants are covering up to 50 percent of improvements, irrigation upgrades suddenly become one of the smartest investments on the farm. A well-planned pivot improvement helps you save on fuel, improve water efficiency, and support healthier soil across your fields.

If you are wondering whether your operation qualifies or what upgrades make the most sense for your land anywhere in Alberta, call New Way Irrigation at (403) 328-3777. We work with producers across the province and are happy to walk through the options before you even start the paperwork.

Let’s make it simple. There is real money on the table right now, and it can help your pivot run cheaper and smarter starting this season.

The #1 Grant Farmers Need to Know Right Now

The biggest opportunity available today is Alberta’s Water Program under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (SCAP). This program is designed specifically to help producers upgrade irrigation systems and water infrastructure without carrying the full cost themselves.

Under the On-Farm Irrigation Stream, farmers can receive 50 percent cost-share funding for improvements.

That includes:

  • up to $17,500 per parcel for major system upgrades such as converting to a new pivot or improving system efficiency
  • up to $6,000 per parcel for upgrades like nozzle packages, regulators, or variable-rate irrigation technology
  • up to $35,000 per farm per year maximum support

There is also the On-Farm Water Supply Stream, which provides up to $40,000 lifetime funding at a 50 percent cost-share for projects such as dugouts, wells, pipelines, and water storage improvements.

Why does this matter right now?

Because these upgrades reduce pump workload and lower diesel or power use immediately. They also help apply water more evenly across your fields, which reduces runoff, protects soil structure, and supports stronger soil biology. When moisture stays consistent in the root zone, your soil microbes stay active and your crops respond better through the season.

Eligibility – Let’s Keep It Simple

Most Alberta irrigators already qualify.

If you are:

  • a primary producer with at least $25,000 in annual farm sales
  • the owner of the irrigated land
  • applying for a project that has not already received funding
  • working with invoices dated after April 2023

there is a strong chance your project fits the program requirements.

Many folks assume they are not eligible when they actually are. It is worth checking.

How to Apply – Step by Step Like a Recipe

Here is the straightforward process.

Step 1
Go straight to
alberta.ca/water-program

Step 2
Read the Terms and Conditions and Funding Lists so you know exactly what qualifies

Step 3
Download the application form

Step 4
Gather proof of farm sales and your land ownership documents

Step 5
Fill out the application and attach your receipts or invoices

Step 6
Submit the package by email or mail
Irrigation applications are typically handled through the Lethbridge office
Water supply projects go through Edmonton

Step 7
Call 310-FARM anytime if you have questions
Real people answer that line and they speak farmer

Funding is limited each year, so applying sooner gives you the best chance of approval.

Bonus Programs That Can Help Even More

There are a couple of additional programs worth knowing about while planning irrigation improvements.

The On-Farm Climate Action Fund, delivered through RDAR, can support projects that improve water efficiency and sustainability outcomes. If your irrigation upgrade supports better energy efficiency or soil stewardship goals, this program may help alongside SCAP funding.

Farm Credit Canada has also provided flexibility options such as payment deferrals and expanded credit access in response to rising input costs. That extra breathing room can make it easier to move forward with improvements while grant funding covers a large portion of the investment.

Together, these supports make irrigation improvements more realistic than many producers expect.

Why Partner with New Way Irrigation

When it comes to irrigation in Alberta, experience across the whole province matters.

The team at New Way Irrigation supports producers across Alberta from south to north, including farms in the Oldman, Bow, St. Mary, Milk River, Eastern Irrigation District, Western Irrigation District, and private irrigation systems throughout the province. Every region has different soils, pump setups, and water delivery conditions, and we work with them all every season.

Our approach is simple. We help you build the right irrigation plan for your operation so you can improve efficiency, reduce fuel use, and make the most of available grant funding. While you work through the application process, we prepare the system layout and upgrade path that fits your land and your goals. Once approved, we handle installation with equipment designed specifically for Alberta growing conditions.

Efficient nozzle packages, variable-rate technology, pump improvements, and full pivot systems all work together to reduce fuel use, stabilize soil moisture, and support stronger soil biology. That means better crop consistency and fewer surprises through the season.

Most important, we are proud to serve the agricultural community across Alberta and help producers keep their pivots running reliably year after year.

Don’t Let Another Season Slip By Paying Full Price

There is real support available right now, and it is designed for producers exactly like you. With strong water outlooks and funding covering up to half the cost, this is one of the best opportunities in years to improve irrigation efficiency on your farm.
