Copper span wiring is being stripped from irrigation pivots across the region, leaving farmers with destroyed equipment, no water, and crops in jeopardy. This can’t go on, and we believe our community can make a difference.
This is an active threat in Southern Alberta. Thieves have been cutting and stripping copper span wiring from irrigation pivots across the region. This is not a minor vandalism issue. It is targeted, costly, and happening in the dark. Here’s what every farmer needs to know.
This Is Already Happening Here
This isn’t a distant problem. In March 2025, Brooks RCMP launched an investigation after 200 feet of copper wire was stolen from an irrigation pivot near Patricia, right in our backyard. Copper theft on farms is an ongoing issue across Alberta, and the RCMP is asking anyone who sees suspicious activity to call 911 immediately.
Reported by CHAT News Today, March 2025 “Brooks RCMP says an investigation is underway after 200 feet of copper wire was stolen from an irrigation pivot near Patricia. The RCMP recognizes that copper theft continues to be an issue across Alberta, particularly on farms.” Read the full CHAT News report here: https://chatnewstoday.ca/2025/03/11/200-feet-of-copper-wire-stolen-from-patricia-pivot-police-say/
The Western Irrigation District, which covers over 600 irrigators, has seen this problem grow so serious that they’ve formally partnered with Southern Alberta Crime Stoppers to fight it. Some farmers have had their cables stolen multiple times in a single season. That’s not just theft. That’s an attack on someone’s livelihood. The Numbers Are Alarming Source: Alberta RCMP and Shoot the Breeze, 2025
93% increase in copper wire theft across Alberta between 2021 and 2024
$10M+ lost annually in Alberta to copper wire theft, including property damage
6 weeks is how long some farmers waited for replacement cables while their crops went without water
Why It’s So Devastating
Copper prices have climbed high enough that span wiring has become a target, but what thieves get at the scrap yard is nothing compared to what it costs the farmer. The wiring on an irrigation pivot runs the full length of the machine, tower to tower. When it’s ripped off, you’re not just replacing wire.
The Western Irrigation District puts replacement costs at $8,000 to $10,000 per pivot, and that doesn’t include the labour, the wait on parts, or the days and weeks your crop goes without water at the worst possible time of year.
“They’re not just stealing wire. They’re destroying a very expensive piece of equipment that is vital to crop production and the livelihoods of farming families.”
Some farmers have faced losing upwards of $240,000 in crop production while waiting for replacement cables to arrive. This is a year’s work, gone overnight. These are our neighbours, and it’s happening right here.
What to Watch For
- Vehicles parked near field access roads after dark, especially trucks or vans with no farm markings, or unfamiliar vehicles sitting near pivot corners or field approaches.
- Lights moving along a pivot span late at night. A single flashlight moving slowly along the machine is worth a second look.
- Unfamiliar people near equipment during off hours, whether they’re walking pivot spans, near junction boxes, or around a control panel when there’s no reason for it.
- Scrap metal or wire visible in a vehicle bed. If something feels off, trust that.
- Your own pivot stopped mid field. If it should be running and it’s not, don’t just chalk it up to a technical issue. Go check it out.
This Is a Community Problem and the Community Is the Solution
Law enforcement can’t be in every field, and that’s the reality of farming in Southern Alberta. Our fields are spread out, our nights are quiet, and the people doing this count on being invisible.
What they don’t count on is neighbours watching out for each other. That’s always been how things work out here, and it’s still our greatest strength. If you drive past a quarter section every day and something just doesn’t feel right, trust that instinct. Pull over. Take a photo. Write down a plate number. Make a call.
You won’t always be right. But the one time you are could save someone’s entire season, possibly their entire opperation!
If You See Something, Here’s What to Do
Please don’t approach anyone you suspect is stealing. Your safety matters most. But don’t stay quiet either.
- Call 911 if it’s happening right now. Don’t wait.
- Call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 to report anything suspicious. Tips are completely anonymous. You can also call the RCMP non-emergency line at 310-RCMP (310-7267).
- Let the farmer know as soon as it’s safe to do so. If you know whose land it is, call them. They deserve to know what’s happening on their property.
- Write down what you can. A plate number, a vehicle description, a direction of travel, a rough time. Even partial details can help investigators connect the dots.
- Share this post with your neighbours, your farm groups, and your family. The more eyes we have out there, the harder it is for this to keep happening.
A Note From the New Way Team
We’ve been part of this community for a long time, and this kind of thing hits us hard too. We’ve personally been affected. We know what these machines mean to the families who rely on them, not just the money invested, but the planning, the sacrifice, and the trust that a good irrigation system will carry a crop through a dry summer.
If you’ve been hit by pivot theft or vandalism, please reach out. We’ll do everything we can to help you assess the damage, get parts sourced, and get back up and running as quickly as possible. If you want to talk through options for better protecting your equipment, we’re here for that conversation too.
Look after each other out there. That’s what this community does.
